When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious。 The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge mountains。 In the aftermath of her death, that estate—along with a nine-figure fortune and the complicated legacy of being a McTavish—pass to her adopted son, Camden。

But to everyone’s surprise, Cam wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes。 Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past。

Ten years later, Camden is a McTavish in name only, but a summons in the wake of his uncle’s death brings him and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House。 Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but coming home reminds Cam why he was so quick to leave in the first place。

Jules, however, has other ideas, and the more she learns about Cam’s estranged family—and the twisted secrets they keep—the more determined she is for her husband to claim everything Ruby once intended for him to have。

But Ruby’s plans were always more complicated than they appeared。 As Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light。 Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will––and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave。

3。5 ⭐️’s。 The was a good book, I was kind of expecting more but I liked it enough。 The story was like a cross between Rebecca, Succession & The Fall of the House Of Usher… Ashby house had parallels to Manderley and had the similar idea that the houses themselves are their own character。 Rebecca is a classic and beautiful story that is immersive & long, The Heiress was not as memorable but I still think it’s worth the read。

Dark and twisty with an appropriately ambiguous ending。 The characters are well written and the plot is fast-paced, making it hard to put down。 I was able to predict a few of the twists, so that was satisfying。Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this novel。

3。5/5It's one of the books that twist every twist。 Which is fun because it keeps the suspense。 On the flip side, it tries too hard for my liking and at the cost of characterization。 Nevertheless, it reads quickly and is entertaining。 Credit where credit's due。 That said, if you're in the mood for a story featuring more complex sociopathic characters you can root for (whatever that says about you, or me), check out Peter Swanson's 'The Kind Worth Killing' or William Hertling's 'Kill Process。'Form 3。5/5It's one of the books that twist every twist。 Which is fun because it keeps the suspense。 On the flip side, it tries too hard for my liking and at the cost of characterization。 Nevertheless, it reads quickly and is entertaining。 Credit where credit's due。 That said, if you're in the mood for a story featuring more complex sociopathic characters you can root for (whatever that says about you, or me), check out Peter Swanson's 'The Kind Worth Killing' or William Hertling's 'Kill Process。'Format: audiobook, listened at 2x speed。 Narration: I liked it a lot。 。。。more

Entertaining story about the enigmatic heiress, Ruby McTavish and the (mostly) not so endearing wealthy McTavish family。 Well written, and surprisingly fairly suspenseful。 Kept me entertained until the end。

I could not put this book down! Truly an addictive read。 The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins is a gothic thriller that includes mystery, suspense, and family secrets。 What more could you ask for?! This was the first book of hers that I have read and definitely will be checking out more。 I was truly on the edge of my seat and didn’t know what was coming next。 This book explores themes of inheritance, hidden pasts, and the consequences of unearthing long-hidden truths。 Definitely a must read! Felt like there was a little too much going on here - a handful of different mysteries to be solved, that didn't quite mesh together。 I usually am a fan of Rachel Hawkins, but this one fell short for me。 But of course I'm always going to support a woman whose multiple husbands died under mysterious circumstances。 2。5 stars? I have grown to love my annual read of the latest Rachel Hawkins book。 This one is no exception to her page-turning works。 The Heiress is told from the perspective of a married couple, independently of each other。 Cam, who has inherited his adoptive mother’s estate, including the massive property it sits on, Ashby House, and plenty of money and his wife, Jules, who knows that her husband has severed all ties with his family but she is personally wanting him to reconsider。 They finally decide to I have grown to love my annual read of the latest Rachel Hawkins book。 This one is no exception to her page-turning works。 The Heiress is told from the perspective of a married couple, independently of each other。 Cam, who has inherited his adoptive mother’s estate, including the massive property it sits on, Ashby House, and plenty of money and his wife, Jules, who knows that her husband has severed all ties with his family but she is personally wanting him to reconsider。 They finally decide to make the trip back to North Carolina in order to work out the details of the estate and have a cross country road trip to get there。 As they climb the mountain to the home, the tension for Cam rises while the excitement for Jules also rises。 You can feel the sense of dread that Cam is experiencing while Jules is in awe of the property。 Hawkins creates brilliant gothic vibes with all the years of historically awful things that have surrounded the family and Ashby House。 Each character that you meet has a reason to be sufficiently appalling as a human which adds to the mystery and intrigue。 In addition, the voice of Ruby, well known for her trail of dead husbands, who is the deceased mother and matriarch of the property, is heard through letters revealing many of her deepest secrets。 This gives us a steady stream of twists and turns。 In addition to this, all of the characters have secrets of their own to reveal。Although nothing about the weather in this story implies a wintery atmosphere, this is a deliciously sinister and gothic story to start the new year。#TheHeiress #NetGalley #StMartinsPress 。。。more

A wealthy daughter of a mega famous man goes missing as a child, a hint towards changelings, and when she passes the adopted son comes home with his wife to settle up the score。 This just didn't quite work for me。 I did appreciate the different perspectives told and the tiny twists leading to the ending, but I just wanted more about the motivations behind the actions, and I personally would have liked more about the changeling idea than we got。 I liked it well enough, but fear I will forget it o A wealthy daughter of a mega famous man goes missing as a child, a hint towards changelings, and when she passes the adopted son comes home with his wife to settle up the score。 This just didn't quite work for me。 I did appreciate the different perspectives told and the tiny twists leading to the ending, but I just wanted more about the motivations behind the actions, and I personally would have liked more about the changeling idea than we got。 I liked it well enough, but fear I will forget it over time。Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I’ve read 7 books so far this year that were all pretty lackluster, but ohhhhh my god this one took me right out of that meh state。 It reminded me of a darker Evelyn Hugo, the fabulous old woman telling her story even if it was a little twisty。 I didn’t expect anything that was coming。 OBSESSED。 I will think about this book all year。 If you’re a fan of anything suspenseful but not quite dark and gory, this one is for you!!! I’ve only read one other book from Rachel Hawkins before but loved it so much that I just knew I had to read The Heiress, and I’m so glad that I did! All the different points of view may tell different stories but they all come together in the end。 If I’ve learned anything from reading this book, it’s that all the little details matter in this story, so be sure to pay attention。 There are many secrets that come to light, some more surprising than others。 The Heiress was such an enjoyable book。 I really enjoyed the small tribute to Rachel Hawkins’ book The Villa, with the Aestas album reference too。 I can’t wait to see what book Rachel Hawkins comes out with next。 Thank you Netgalley and St Martin’s Press publishing for a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 5/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 。。。more

The Heiress is the latest page-turning thriller by Rachel Hawkins! I’m giving this 3。5 stars。 Her writing style is so easy to read, I was fully invested in the story。 This was maybe a 5 star book heading into the final quarter。 I loved how the chapters alternated between POVs, including letters and news articles。 Unfortunately the twists were a bit of a let down。 This specific type of twist isn’t my favorite。 But overall I enjoyed this!

I loved Hawkins' debut novel 'The Wife Upstairs' and this book is even more darkly delicious than that one。 The McTavish clan is a twisted family, with Ruby McTavish being one of the most interesting characters I've read in years。 However, all the characters are deeply complex and complicated。 Ruthless and self righteous, but with hints of humanity and humility sprinkled in。 Plus Ashby House is just the perfect setting if you love old crumbling manors as much as I do。 I absolutely recommend this book。 In fact, I have a copy of the book plus got the audiobook when it came out。 Read it。 You won't be disappointed。 。。。more

When the adopted son, Cam, of Ruby McTavish leaves him her entire estate worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the biological descendants investigate the legitimacy of the will and Rudy's past。 What follows is a history of murder and malfeasance as Rudy's checkered past is gradually revealed, threatening Cam's inheritance。 This is a great thriller。 While it starts off slow and somewhat muddled, it settles into a fast-past thriller that is impossible to put down。 Novelist Rachel Hawkins has done When the adopted son, Cam, of Ruby McTavish leaves him her entire estate worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the biological descendants investigate the legitimacy of the will and Rudy's past。 What follows is a history of murder and malfeasance as Rudy's checkered past is gradually revealed, threatening Cam's inheritance。 This is a great thriller。 While it starts off slow and somewhat muddled, it settles into a fast-past thriller that is impossible to put down。 Novelist Rachel Hawkins has done an outstanding job, and I highly recommend it。 。。。more

Sometimes evil is easy to identify, and that's how we are misled in Rachel Hawkins' latest thriller, THE HEIRESS。 Camden McTavish fled the tiny town of Tavistock, North Carolina, where the ancestral family manor, Ashby House, was situated in the midst of beautiful mountains。 His wife, Jules, doesn't really know why he left the home where his adopted mother, Ruby, raised him。 His family was the wealthiest in the state, and Cam was the recipient of the whole estate when his mother died。 But he rej Sometimes evil is easy to identify, and that's how we are misled in Rachel Hawkins' latest thriller, THE HEIRESS。 Camden McTavish fled the tiny town of Tavistock, North Carolina, where the ancestral family manor, Ashby House, was situated in the midst of beautiful mountains。 His wife, Jules, doesn't really know why he left the home where his adopted mother, Ruby, raised him。 His family was the wealthiest in the state, and Cam was the recipient of the whole estate when his mother died。 But he rejected his inheritance and fled, ending up in California, where he met Jules。The couple now live in a small rented house in Colorado。 When Cam's cousin Ben asks him to return because there is business he is needed for, including upkeep of the huge estate, he reluctantly agrees。 Jules is excited to visit there, and Hawkins carefully reveals that there is more to her interest than we know。 In fact, there is much that Hawkins is hiding。 Important facts are carefully doled out bit by bit。 The ultimate effect isn't one shocking twist as we might find in some suspense novels, but rather a series of small revelations that serve to change our view of most of the main characters。At the center of the story is Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore, whose nickname, only muttered in undertones, is "Kill-more," in honor of the four husbands who all died under quasi-suspicious circumstances。 Ruby's own background is mysterious, and as the beloved daughter to the wealthy McTavish family, she was kidnapped when she was just a toddler。 After almost a year, private detectives hired by her father located her in the South and brought her home。 Her younger sister Nelle, a nasty and bitter woman, doesn't believe it was Ruby who was returned to the family。 But their father left his entire estate to Ruby, and Nelle refuses to leave the family home。 So she and her two grandchildren, also extremely unpleasant types, live there。We learn more about Ruby from her own hand, through a series of letters she writes to an unknown person。 In them, she explains the details of her marriages and her relationships with her father and sister。 There are also pieces from society magazines about Ruby and her husbands。 Eventually, we are able to figure out who Ruby really is, but Hawkins keeps a few secrets hidden。When Jules and Cam return to Ashby, the welcome is far from warm。 But in the acrimonious exchanges between Cam and his cousins, bitter truths are revealed and old animosities renewed。 The surprises that Hawkins discloses have us questioning everything we thought we knew about these characters。 What is the truth surrounding Ruby, Cam and Jules?Hawkins forces us to consider this question: What are the truths that we can live with and the truths that we don't need to know? As Cam shares his belief that the truth doesn't matter in the end, he says, "The truth isn't some finite thing, it's what we all choose to believe。" Is the truth some random fact from the past, or is it who and what we are now? In THE HEIRESS, we are left wondering who the good guys are and what the truth is。 It's an interesting point, and Hawkins has us thinking carefully about our own truths and how they influence our lives。Reviewed by Pamela Kramer 。。。more
